Composed on residency at Centro Mexicano para la Musica y las Artes Sonoras (CMMAS) in spring 2024 and exhibited at Visiones Sonoras 20 festival in Morelia, Mexico September 2024, Light Being is an octophonic installation, primarily composed of voice and synthesised pure tones. Playing with harmonics and temporal and spatial separations of these, the piece moves around the listener, placing them ‘inside’ the sound. A ring of candles capture the movements of aerial traces, acting as a mandela, transferring the locus of experience to the space.

I am interested in the energetic dimensions of the human, the notion that we may be nothing more than fields than can ripple and manifest as particles. That the material, temporospatial world, as we experience it, may be merely a perceptual experience, having no actual substance beyond how it appears to us. Using the voice as vehicle, I increasingly think of the installation as a form of portraiture, only one that emerges, layered over and over until it gathers the appearance of substance.
